Lee Creek Teeth, Shells, and Bones

It is a comatulid crinoid. I doubt that it is from Lee Creek, it looks like Eocene Castle Hayne.

Well, this is a neat little find, but I don't see how that could be possible. :P I found it in the Lee Creek micro matrix that I found all the other micros of this thread in. This particular batch of matrix was part of an auction run by the forum member sixgill pete. I don't think it's from a different formation, unless it was reworked or he accidentally mixed up two different matrices.

Compare it with Microcrinus conoideus, a common Eocene species from North Carolina. I don't think there has been a comatulid found in the Pungo River or Yorktown Formations.

Like Al Dente said it is a comatulid crinoid and it definitely looks like Microcrinus conoideus. This could have come from the table I dry my matrix on. I dried some Castle Hayne matrix a few days before I dried your matrix. I try and make sure I clean it off completely but this must ve been left on the table and got pushed of into your box. Sorry for the contamination, but you got a nice little crinoid. So far everything else you have posted is definitely from Lee Creek.

Normally I search one spoonful of matrix at a time. I was very happy when I found TWO whale shark teeth in one scoop! I'm starting to think whale shark teeth aren't as rare as I thought. :)

Well, that's fine. I am glad I posted it here - otherwise it would probably be mislabeled. But what label should I give it? Eocene crinoid, possibly from the Castle Hayne Formation?

I think I would label it, under the circumstances. ?Microcrinus conoideus ; ?Eocene Castle Hayne Formation Onslow County N.C

If I had found it in the matrix I dried (and I did find 2 crinoids, 1 of these) This is what it would have been labeled without the question marks.
