married2rick
I'm trying to plan a 4 day fossil hunting trip for my sister's & I for the month of March. We live in South Central Pennsylvania, Lancaster County. We would be okay traveling 5-6 hours. Any site suggestions? Thanks in advance for your suggestions! Fossildude19
What do you wish to look for/find? That is the question! Glad to see you back here, M2R. married2rick
Thanks Jpevahouse and hey Tim! I got a number of ideas from the Fossilguy.com site. Tim, Trilobites are my favorite. I think all 3 of us would be thrilled to find any fossils except the fern kind. Spring is coming, the snow is finally about all gone and I'm really starting to think about finding fossils! Fossildude19
Well, ... It would depend on the weather, ... and any possible snow coverage,... but you might consider going to Deep Springs Road Quarry in Earlville, NY. See these threads for a taste of what you could find. LINK 1 LINK 2 Checking on Google maps, it looks like it might be a 5 hour drive or so for you. There are also at least 4 other sites within a 45 minute radius of that site - mostly the same types of fossils, however. Something to consider,... at least. Raggedy Man
Tim, I was under the impression that the Deep Springs cut was private property and permission was needed. Does this still hold true? Best regards, Paul 1 ...I'm back.
married2rick
Thanks Tim for the links and suggestions. Both Links were very interesting & informative! I just sent a PM to Jeffrey P asking what the weather might be like in his neck of the woods in mid March. Maybe I am to rambunctious by thinking we can get out there and hunt this early in the year. Maybe Jeffrey will be able to answer Raggedy Man's question about needing permission to hunt here. Maybe I should be thinking of heading South instead of North, lol. Does this still hold true? Best regards, Paul Paul, Having talked with the land owner the last time I was there,... he said they were happy to host fossil hunters, as we provided a service of breaking down the rock for them. He said we (meaning fossil hunters in general) were always welcome. Once in a while, they allow some people to live at the site in an RV. It is always courteous to ask them if they mind. They have been gracious in the past. M2R, Well, your biggest issues are weather and snow cover. Right now, I don't think there is any snow cover, but that could change. I have been there in 39 degree weather, and really not noticed the cold, as I was too busy fossil hunting. You just have to keep an eye on the weather forecasts. There are websites that allow you to check the amount of snow cover in some states. Keep an eye on that too. Raggedy Man
Thanks Tim! I was curious about that myself, but just wanted to clarify this for Married. I know you wouldn't have suggested that site if it weren't open to collection and was just being safe. Criminal trespassing isnt fun...lol ...I'm back.
