matt2396
I know this is a pretty specific topic, but some of you might be able to help me out. I live in Macon County, Illinois, and I wanting to make a day trip down to the Shawnee region to look for some fossils. After looking on this site I have decided on two cuts, one along IL 146 and one on the I-24 on ramp. The old school website that has the list of fossil sites by state claims that the I-24 cut requires an IDOT permit. I also found a seemingly much newer site that claims the 146 cut requires an IDOT permit as well. I was just wondering if anyone who has visited these localities lately could confirm this, I would hate to drive three hours south to be turned away by the IDNR or state police. Thanks, Matt Old school site: http://donaldkenney.x10.mx/STATES/IL.HTM Newer site: http://digitalrockhound.blogspot.com/2009/05/fossil-collecting-index-for-north.html
Fossildude19
Do you have a permit? If not, then why not just try to obtain one? Call the DOT and ask for more information. Regards, I'll certainly call IDOT, I just found requiring a permit a bit strange. I've seen these cuts mentioned plenty of times without the word "permit" ever popping up. Thanks for the response! matt2396
Update: Called IDOT in Carbondale a couple of times, but never got a response from anyone who might grant me permission. I'm still not even sure if a permit is required, I've seen users on this site talking about visiting there, as well as a photo album from someone's trip. I may have to just contact a couple of members on this forum.
