Cleaning / Preserving pyritized fossil wood

Recommended Posts

Hi, I am lucky to be near a great source of pyritized fossil wood, but have had little joy in my attempts to clean and preserve a nice piece for my display. If anyone has any knowledge or good advise on this subject I would be grateful for any help.

This is a well covered topic here on the Forum.

Do a Forum Topic search for "Pyrite Disease". ;)

Thanks @Fossildude19 I'm still quite new to fossil hunting and this forum, never heard of it put as "Pyrite Disease" , to be honest never even thought of searching as not sure what to search for (still learning the lingo). But great to see there is a wealth of info help here :)

I am afraid, not an easy but very important topic. These papers might help a bit to get started:

pyrite conservation[1].pdf

Shinya_and_Bergwall_2007.pdf

Hope you can save your wood. First thing to do is to keep it as dry as possible - low air humidity is a must.
