FrozenInTime
Correct, it comes from the Lias Epsilon of Holzmaden (or neighboring towns like Ohmden) in Bavaria, Southern Germany. The plate the actually fossil sits on right now is likely not it's authentic matrix (but is from the same quarry), it was put in this matrix for aesthetic purposes, they do the same with the beautiful Traumatocrinus crinoids, Dapedium fish, and even crocodiles coming from this fairly unknown lagerstätte. cheers, Mark
Terry Dactyll
Thanks Coco&FrozenInTime...... I have heard of Holzmaden shales, I have seen dactylioceras and harpoceras crushed within some examples before....and I know about some fossils being mounted in it as it is 'pretty stable' stuff..... Its does give the whole package done this way.... the predator and the prey....... and displays the bones beautifully, rarther than a mixed up dissarticulated jumble....... Cheers Steve...
