You can be hit by a boat and die

You can be attacked by a shark and die

OR you could fall off the couch and die

GET OFF THE COUCH - go scuba!

the photo just isn't really good for id'ing things. i'd say it isn't shell and it isn't bone, but it could be petrified wood, but can't tell from the photo. need clearer photos of both sides.

actually, i'm going to reverse myself. just can't even rule out shell without clearer pictures.

the older fossil bone from the north sulphur is most frequently black and looks nothing like that piece.

It's some sort of crystal formation. I can't remember what it's called. Where's the NSR Posse?

no, he probably means slickenside calcite, and that's a possibility, because that stuff is common at the NSR...

Another new photo. Notice the crisscross pattern.

ok, well, i'm going with my last guess. i don't see organic. looks like geologic processes working on mineral to me. look up "slickenside" on google and read a couple of hits.

I believe you hit the nail on the head tracer. I have seen a lot of this at the river and that is what it looks like to me.

Could it be Actinostroma?

The pattern of striations are criss-cross, not all one direction.
