Tooth Id

Hey everyone, I found this piece of a tooth today and was wondering if anybody knew what it was from? It looks like the root of something to me but it has weird lumps on it. It was found at place that seems to have both miocene and pleistocene fossils so this has been a real tough one for me to figure out.

I am not familiar with the area you hunt but, to me, that looks like a chunk of black Goethite or possibly Psilomelene and not a fossil.

At first glance it looks kind of like Mastodon tooth material, but the cross section looks almost crystaline and is reminicent of the minerals shamalama mentioned. How large is this piece?

I have been looking at some pictures and it does seem to resemble the outer edge of a gomphothere tooth.
