Can anyone help me identify these two teeth? I am new to fossil collecting and need to learn more. Can you also explain how you know what type species the teeth came from- this way I will know how to identify in future. Found at Onslow Beach, Jacksonville, NC Thank you

These teeth, like many found on the beach are extremely water worn. However I believe both to be mega shark teeth. Otodus sp. is what I would most likely label them. Since they were found on Onslow Beach they are most likely Oligocene in age, that would make them Otodus angustidens.

Thank you for the reply! I quickly went to a website that discusses this type of shark. I also found badly worn vertebrae. I wonder if it is from same species. I will research the New Zeland  specimen that was found in well preserved condition. I can’t thank you enough for taking time to respond to my post.

Could the one on the left on the first image be a mako, it kind of looks like one to me. But nice finds:dinothumb:.

Welcome to the forum!

I'd second angustidens for the tooth on the right. The left one is a bit more tricky. Good finds!

Look at the shape and thickness of the root. Not a mako in my opinion. Also remember both of these teeth are extremely water worn.

Yeah I'm not the best at shark teeth. But yes they are very worn.
