I really can't tell what it is, but, though i have a few Mazon Creek pieces, i'm no expert.

That's a claw of the tully isn't it?

Do they have claws this month ? :)

Seems like every time you look this puzzle has been re solved.

Yup. That's the way it goes with Mazon Creek nodules. They are the Rorschach Ink Blot Test of fossils. Some are easier to make out if you've seen a large number of specimens of a particular species but many are really hard to pin down. I'm missing any key features that I'd associate with a Tully but (having never found one myself) I've little experience in identifying this species. Perhaps @fossilized6s or @Rob Russell might have a more informed opinion as I too see only a rock.

Cheers.

I know, but sometimes the Mazon Creek stuff is more visible with a trained eye.  ;)

I am poor at seeing some of these Mazon 'ghosts'. With Tullys, it's "eye-bar or it didn't happen" for me...

I've been told its the butt end and supposedly the head is under the other half thats not removed.

In the first picture I see the shape of  the claw/forked nose or whatever it's called. It's vague but discernible.

I think that might be a trick of the eye--but then faint fossils in Mazon Creek nodules are nothing if not tricks of the eye sometimes.

Cheers.

Maybe it's back to the freeze thaw routine ?

From what I have learned about Mazon Creek fossils over my years here on the Forum, these nodules have a tendency

to not do well with the Freeze/Thaw cycle, once a major break has been made.   I'd be hesitant to try it, myself.

The problem is that if you really try you can find several more of these shapes that are equally well defined in the rest of the rock.

Don't surrender your conviction so easily.

I suppose the one way to know for sure, and not risk ruining it, would be to reach out and see if someone with good preparation skills might help. :)

If you won that at their auction then there is no doubt that it’s a partial tully.  Congratulations on your new fossil.

I assume you are familiar with their standards, but do you care to offer an opinion on which part ?

It's odd how organic these wrinkles look now. :headscratch:

Is that where the 'hose' was ? and the eye bar over to the left ?
