siteseer
---------------------------------------------- Hey guys, a perfect example of why you use scientific nomenclature - no doubts. Smilodon, Yes. The question in my mind was if "la baleine," the word for a baleen whale, was also the word for "whale" in general (as entered in every French-English dictionary I have ever had) and it turns out not to be. The French use "cetace" (with accent aigu over the e's), which would be same as the average American referring to all whales as cetaceans (the technical term). As a side note, if anyone out there has the Eyewitness Book titled "Whale," which also covers sirenians and pinnipeds, you will find a few gross errors on page 40, the figure showing the skeleton of an elephant seal. It has one bone marked as a "fibia" (no such bone) - actually pointing to the radius. The ulna is marked as the tibia and the actual tibia is marked as the femur. The actual femur is not marked as anything. Fibia? Is that near Namibia or is that the Latin term for an untruth.
