New Members Lemissap Posted December 31, 2018 New Members Share Posted December 31, 2018 (edited) Hello! I’m hoping to identify this fossil I found while wandering a mesa just south of Santa Fe, New Mexico. It was laying neatly in the sand just waiting to be found. The pits on the end look very much like bone marrow. I chose to leave it at the ranch where I found it, so I only have one pic. I could get more if needed! Thanks! Tidgy's Dad
Pics of the ends may change my opinion, but looks like a concretion, or possibly an burrow infilling to me to me. Life's Good! Tortoise Friend.
New Members Lemissap Posted December 31, 2018 Author New Members Share Posted December 31, 2018 Interesting! I’ll have to wait a couple of weeks for more pictures. I’m wishing I had brought it home now, such a neat find! It was pretty heavy and looked just like marrow pitting on the ends.

I agree with Adam on this. ynot
+1 for concretion.
masonboro37
I agree with both members, looks like a burrow internal mold, concretion maybe. I have found several in my area which are similar. The ones which I have found are crustacean burrows. Nice find by the way! Process of identification "mistakes create wisdom".

If it’s fairly heavy like a chunk of metal, it’s probably an iron concretion. Next time you’re by it, try sticking a fairly strong magnet to it. Sometimes they’ll stick confirming it’s iron. 1 Each dot is 50,000,000 years: Hadean............Archean..............................Proterozoic.......................................Phanerozoic........... New Members Lemissap Posted December 31, 2018 Author New Members Share Posted December 31, 2018 Thanks everyone! I’m agonizing over not taking more pictures! I was convinced it was bone.
