macedon
I found this in Carmel Valley, CA. Upper Miocene, Aguajito Shale, Monterey Formation. The location is famous for the abundant crab fossils (Pinnixa galliheri). A few small fish have been found. Perhaps this is from one?

Auspex
I think you have it right; nice looking fossil, too. Did you have to do much prep work on it? Auspex
Well... ah, I split the soft shale with a hatchet. Well, Paul Bunyan, it worked pretty good! I have to say again that I find this to be a pretty fossil. macedon
Must have been a lucky hatchet. Funny but it works great on the soft Aguajito shale. I've found dozens and dozens of crabs at that site just that way.
dfwphotoguy
Must have been a lucky hatchet. Funny but it works great on the soft Aguajito shale. I've found dozens and dozens of crabs at that site just that way. Awesome find! Curious if you were at Jacks Peak or one of the surronding areas? Loch_Nessie and I were out and got a few leaves but nothing spectacular. The area is amazing though for sure!
macedon
No, not Jack's Peak. This site is in Carmel Valley. South on Hi-way 1 from Monterey. Google maps directions: http://tinyurl.com/ylr4fyf I've collected here several times. Lots of crabs, a few clams. There is plenty of room to park off the road, and there is little to no traffic. Auspex
I've driven right by it! Oh, the lost opportunity... Had a van-load of birders on my hands at the time. Now I wish I had a couple of those crabs.
